Dialogas: On English Climate
Father: Emily, you were in the United Kingdom not long ago.
Emily: Yes, my father. It was wonderful! The climate is mild on the island. The North Sea is to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean is in the west. The Irish Sea is between Ireland and Great Britain. The English Channel is to the south. When English people meet, they always speak about the weather.
Father: What can you say about the seasons of the year?
Emily: Oh! There are no winters there. The rivers and lakes do not freeze. Sometimes you can see snow on the mountains which are not very high. Ben Nevis is 1343 metres high in Scotland. There are a lot of foggy days during all the seasons.
Father: Are the days hot in summers?
Emily: Seldom. If the temperature is 23 or 25 degrees above zero, the English say that they have a hot summer. The grass is green all the year round. People sit, play, walk or lie on the grass in the parks. Great Britain is a country of gardens and flowers.
Father: London has 180 rainy days in a year. People often wear raincoats and take umbrellas. By the way, do you know the origin of the things as raincoat and umbrella?
Emily: Yes, of course! Jonas Hanway, an Englishman, was the first man with the umbrella in London. It was almost two hundred years ago.
Father: You said about the word umbrella. What about raincoat?
Emily: I am sorry, but I know nothing about raincoats.
Father: Listen! Raincoats came from coats which were waterproof. The Englishman Charles Mackintosh (1766–1843) was the inventor of raincoats.
Emily: Thank you very much.
Father: I am glad that you read a lot of books about the United Kingdom and its capital London.
