Kada vartojamas „the“

1. Jūrų, vandenynų, upių, ežerų pavadinimai

The North Sea is to the east of Great Britain.
There are a lot of different fish in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Thames flows through London.

✅ Vandens telkinių pavadinimai anglų kalboje visada rašomi su „the“.


2. Salių, dykumų, kalnynų, kanalų pavadinimai

The British Isles are in Europe.
There is very little water in the Sahara.
Was Ted in the Alps?
How wide is the English Channel?

✅ „The“ vartojamas su salų grupėmis, dykumomis, kanalais, kalnų grandinėmis.
⚠️ Su vienu kalnu ar viena sala artikelis paprastai nevartojamas (Mount Everest, Sicily).


3. Kai kurių šalių pavadinimai

The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States of America.

✅ „The“ vartojamas su šalimis, kurių pavadinimuose yra žodžiai Kingdom, States, Republic, Emirates, Netherlands.


4. Pastatų, muziejų, teatrų, viešbučių pavadinimai

The Nemunas and the Neris surround the Kaunas Castle.
It is very interesting to see various things in the British Museum.
The Donelaitis is in the port now.
The Planeta shows interesting films.

✅ „The“ vartojamas su pastatų, muziejų, teatrų, viešbučių, laivų pavadinimais.


5. Pasaulio šalių kryptys

A strong wind blew from the west.

✅ Su kryptimis vartojamas „the“ (the north, the south, the east, the west).


6. Pavardės daugiskaitoje

The Starlings built a new house in Kaunas.

✅ Kai kalbama apie šeimą (The Browns, The Smiths), vartojamas „the“.


Kada „the“ nevartojamas

  • Su last ir next:

    Della wasn’t in Scotland last year.
    I shall tell you everything next month.

  • Po neiginio no:

    There is no picture on the wall.

  • Prieš gatvių, aikščių pavadinimus:

    There is a museum in Putvinskio Street.
    Do they go to church in Independence Square?

  • Po įvardžių a lot of, many, much:

    Emily reads a lot of books.
    Do you have many friends?

  • Prieš sporto pavadinimus:

    Almita doesn’t like tennis.

  • Prieš maisto pavadinimus (breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper):

    When did the Netways have their supper?
    The dinner was delicious. (kai konkretus atvejis)
