(Degrees of Comparison – Irregular Forms)

Kai kurių būdvardžių aukštesnysis ir aukščiausiasis laipsniai sudaromi ne pagal bendras taisykles:

Positive Comparative Superlative Vertimas
good better the best geras – geresnis – geriausias
bad worse the worst blogas – blogesnis – blogiausias
little less the least mažas – mažesnis – mažiausias
many / much more the most daug – daugiau – daugiausia

Example:

The weather became worse and worse.
There is less snow this winter.
His skis are the best among all of us.


Old / Older / Oldest and Elder / Eldest

Kai kurie būdvardžiai turi po dvi aukštesniojo ir aukščiausiojo laipsnio formas, kurios skiriasi reikšme:

Positive Comparative Superlative Vertimas
old older the oldest senesnis – seniausias
elder the eldest vyresnis – vyriausias (šeimoje)

Examples:

This is the oldest building in the town.
Pete’s elder brother is a turner.

Pastaba:
Formos elder, eldest vartojamos kalbant apie šeimos narius.
Kai vartojamas žodis than, sakome older, ne elder.

Linda is older than Emily.


Late / Latter / Last

Form Vertimas Naudojimas
late – later – the latest vėlyvas – vėlesnis – paskutinis (laiko atžvilgiu)
latter – the last pastarasis – pats paskutinis (eilės atžvilgiu)

Example:

Later hours showed that Emily was right.
The latest news about her husband’s work is very important.


Far / Further / Farther

Form Vertimas Paaiškinimas
far – farther – the farthest tolimas – tolimesnis – tolimiausias (apie atstumą)
further – the furthest tolimas – tolimesnis – tolimiausias (apie eilę, papildomumą)

Example:

Pete took the farthest road of all.
Does Emily have any further questions?


Near / Nearer / Nearest

Form Vertimas
near – nearer – the nearest artimas – artimesnis – artimiausias
nearer – the next artimesnis – kitas

Example:

Come nearer, please.
Will you come to me next Tuesday?


Apibendrinimas

Aukštesnysis laipsnis parodo didesnį ypatybės kiekį ir vartojamas lyginant du daiktus arba žmones tos pačios ypatybės atžvilgiu.

Example:

In winter the days are shorter than in summer.
