GRAMMAR. INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

Indefinite pronouns show an unknown or undefined person, thing, or quantity.
The most common are some and any, and their compounds body, one, thing.


Some /sʌm/

Means “some, a few, a bit.”
Used in positive sentences with countable and uncountable nouns.

Linda has some books on English art.
Can I take some more fish?


Any /ˈeni/

Means “any, some, no.”
Used mostly in questions and negative sentences.

Do they find any German books to read?
Take any apple you want.
✅ Note: In positive sentences, any means “any at all.” (Any book will do.)


Somebody / Someone

Means “some person.” Used with singular verbs.

Ted thinks there is somebody at the door.


Something

Means “some thing.”

Nick told her something very important.


Anybody / Anyone

Means “any person, anyone, nobody.”
Used with singular verbs.

I don’t know anybody who can translate this text better than you.


Anything

Means “any object or nothing.”

There wasn’t anything in that box.

💡 Someone / somebody and anyone / anybody are almost the same; someone sounds slightly more formal.
Some is also used in polite offers: Would you like some tea?

Summer is the best season of the year.
It is much warmer than in spring.

People like to be on holiday.

They have a rest by the sea, near the river or lake.
