Grammar: Continuous (Progressive) Tenses
Continuous Tenses show an action that is happening, was happening, or will be happening.
Structure:
to be (in the correct tense) + main verb + –ing

Verbs not used in Continuous Tenses
Some verbs are not usually used in –ing forms, because they express states, not actions:
- Senses: hear, see, smell, notice
- Mind verbs: agree, believe, know, remember, understand
- Possession: be, belong, have, depend
Spelling Rules for –ing
- play → playing
- try → trying
- lie → lying (ie → y)
- take → taking (drop final e)
- swim → swimming (double last consonant after short vowel)

Negative Form
The sun is not shining today.
