Grammar: Continuous (Progressive) Tenses

Continuous Tenses show an action that is happening, was happening, or will be happening.

Structure:

to be (in the correct tense) + main verb + –ing

Tense Example Meaning
Present Continuous I am reading now. Veiksmas vyksta dabar
Past Continuous I was reading at 5 p.m. Veiksmas vyko praeityje
Future Continuous I shall be reading at 5 p.m. Veiksmas vyks ateityje

Verbs not used in Continuous Tenses

Some verbs are not usually used in –ing forms, because they express states, not actions:

  • Senses: hear, see, smell, notice
  • Mind verbs: agree, believe, know, remember, understand
  • Possession: be, belong, have, depend

Spelling Rules for –ing

  1. play → playing
  2. try → trying
  3. lie → lying (ie → y)
  4. take → taking (drop final e)
  5. swim → swimming (double last consonant after short vowel)

Question Form

Is it raining now?
What are you doing at the moment?

Negative Form

The sun is not shining today.
