London is the capital of the United Kingdom.
It is one of the oldest cities in the world.
The city stands on the banks of the River Thames.
The capital is a great port, though London is situated far from the North Sea.

London is famous for its streets and buses, bridges and squares, parks and monuments.
The main transport is the underground. It is long and has a lot of stations.
The red buses and black taxis go along the streets.
There are more than thirty bridges over the River Thames.
The most interesting of them is the Tower Bridge.
It has two parts which can be raised for the ships to sail under it.

Some streets are narrow and dirty, but others are clean, wide and famous for something.
Fleet Street is for newspaper reporters; at 10 Downing Street the Prime Minister lives.
The Queen’s residence is in Buckingham Palace.
Foreign guests visit the British Museum.
Madame Tussaud’s exhibition is famous for wax sculptures.
A lot of visitors from all over the world come to admire famous people there.

Parks, green lawns and squares surround the capital.
Hyde Park is the biggest one. People make speeches in the Speakers’ Corner there.
You can find a large zoo in Regent’s Park.
St James’ Park and Green Park are not far from one another.
People come to have a rest, read a book or go in for sports in the parks.
