Ireland is famous for its wonderful green fields.
The climate is mild, with damp winters and cloudy summers.
The island is the first to meet the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.
The rivers are short but deep. The longest river is the Shannon (200 miles).

From ancient times the main occupation of the Irish people was cattle-breeding.
Green is the national colour of Ireland.

The history of the country is a long fight for freedom.
In 1171 King Henry II of England landed in Dublin, and the country remained under British rule for centuries.
In 1949, Ireland declared itself an independent republic.
The capital is Dublin, one of the most ancient capitals in the world.

Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom with the capital Belfast.
This part of the country is called Ulster.
Belfast is the largest industrial centre in Ireland.
The Botanical Gardens, Queen’s University, and the Palm House (the only one of its kind in the world) are popular sights to visit.

Cork is the second city of the Republic, and Limerick is known for its many churches.
